$295k Settlement Reached Prior to Litigation
Our firm represented “Andrew Adams” in a medical negligence case against the City of St. Paul. While responding to a 911 call, the city’s paramedics failed to provide adequate care, significantly affecting Adams’ health and recovery. This case settled for $295k before litigation.
In November 2022, Adams’ son called 911 when he observed signs that his father was experiencing a stroke. When the paramedics arrived, Adams’ son, Howard, informed EMS of Adams’ stroke symptoms and requested further care at a hospital. The paramedics disregarded his request and failed to administer a stroke test. When Howard continually requested ambulance transportation, the paramedics stated the hospitals were full and could not administer care to Adams. Instead of documenting what occurred, the paramedics’ records state they performed the stroke test on Adams and he refused transportation to the hospital. Adams, a Somali immigrant who cannot speak or read English, did not communicate refusal to the paramedics for hospital transportation.

The City of St. Paul’s Paramedics Medical Negligence led to Permanent Damage
This negligence was entirely preventable, and there were lasting effects on Adams’ health due to the paramedics’ actions. Adams’ condition worsened after the paramedics left, and Howard took him to the hospital. They discovered that Adams had suffered permanent damage to one side of his brain due to multiple strokes. Today, Adams requires 24-hour care due to the negligence displayed by the paramedics who responded to the 911 call.
Delayed Diagnosis was a Breach from the Standard of Care
The paramedics’ failure to perform a stroke test violated the St. Paul Fire Department EMS policies regarding suspected stroke victims. Adams’ symptoms were not evaluated promptly, causing him to miss the window to receive TPA, a treatment that limits a stroke from spreading across the brain.
We filed this case against the City of St. Paul in 2023, and our firm worked diligently on Adams’ behalf until settlement in September 2024.
