What is a Whistleblower?
Whistleblowing has emerged as a prominent tool for promoting transparency and accountability in organizations. The term “whistleblower” refers to a person, in this context an employee, who reports a violation, suspected violation, or planned violation of the law to their employer, the government, or law enforcement.
Whistleblowing could look like reporting any of the following:
- Fraud or misuse of company funds
- Violation of worksite regulations or procedures implemented by agencies such as OSHA
- Breach of care for patients or neglect of patients
- Teachers behaving inappropriately with students
- Discrimination happening to another individual
Whistleblowers are essential in ensuring that companies and corporations know they are not above the law and will be held accountable for their illegal actions. Blowing the whistle is a courageous act of service to the public and to our justice system.
What rights do Whistleblowers have?
As you can imagine, companies often don’t like when someone reports their violations of the law. They may end up deciding to fire the person (or people) who made the report. However, in doing so, they actually break another law.

The Minnesota Whistleblowers Act (MWA) guarantees that employees who report what they suspect to be an illegal activity cannot be terminated, punished, or otherwise retaliated against. These protections also apply to any employee who refuses to participate in suspected illegal activities or assists in an investigation regarding the suspected illegal activities.
